FAQ Jr. High Athletics
Should I bring my child to Jr. High Sports Night?
Yes, our goal is to assist you in training up your child as a Christian athlete. Jr. High Sports night is a perfect teaching moment for your child in areas of responsibility, commitment, listening, and choices. The responsibility to attend, the commitment to playing the whole season, the ability to listen and take notes of all the coach has to share, and the choice to be a part of the team.
Are Jr. High Sports at Calvary more recreational or competitive?
Jr. High is an awkward time for most youth. They are not yet ready to be set free but they are testing the waters to see what it would be like to be on their own. As an athletic ministry we too are not yet ready for them to be set free into a fully competitive environment, but we are letting them test the waters. We are not a recreational sports program that grantees all their athletes playing time, but we do try to get them as much playing time as the coach sees they are ready for, and what the coach considers is best for the team. Each athlete needs to understand that they are not guaranteed playing time, but they are guaranteed a full season of practice and improvement in their sport as well as a coach who is deeply concerned about their spiritual growth as a Christian athlete.
Can I miss a Jr. High Sports Night and still play that season?
No and Yes, Sports night is a huge part of our Jr. High Athletic Ministry. A great sports analogy would be a sprinter starting a race. If the sprinter stands for his start instead of using the starting blocks, he is at a huge disadvantage. His whole race will be affected. Missing sports night is the same. At the meeting you will be able to meet the coach, you will hear his/her goals for the season, you will hear his or her personal rules, and you will start the season well. However we know there will be students entering school late, or family emergencies, so if you miss a Jr. High Sports night for your students sport, you will need to pay a $25 late fee, fill out all the necessary paperwork, come into the athletic office to get the coaches phone number and call the coach for details of the first practice, team rules, etc. One or two families that have an emergency or are entering school late is fine, but when half a football team does not show up to the meeting and the coach is having to repeat the rules, philosophy and the practice times to 15 different parents, not to mention the extra work it cost the athletic office in researching each of those students for academic eligibility, physical form clearance, and insurance waiver clearance.
How late in the season can my child join a sport with Calvary Jr. High?
If this sport has a try out period, the athlete must be at that try-out and can not join the team after that period. If the sport does not have a try-out period, then every player who comes will have a team testing period which is determined by the head coach. If an athlete moves into the area and wants to join a non-try-out team, he or she can do so as long as they pass the team testing and it is before the team’s first game.
What is the Cost of Playing?
There are several expenses that could happen in Jr. High Athletics but the school only mandates the playing cost.
Playing Costs- This can be found at http://www.cmcsweb.com/secondary/athletics/sportsfees2006-07.asp
Traveling Expense – Cost of gas for students and family to attend practices and games.
Mission Trips/ Team Building – Each coach has the chance to send their athletes on a mission/service project during the season.
Banquet and Team Parties – Families may be asked to support financial by other parents for banquet gifts, parties, etc.
Are Playing Fees Refundable or Waived?
The cost of playing can not be waved or refunded once the student is considered a member of the team.
The definition of a team member in this case is as follows:
If try-outs are made for an athletic team, a student is considered a member of the team once the try-outs are completed and the student has been accepted as a member of the team.
If there are no try-outs for the athletic team, a student is considered a member of the athletic team once they participated in the first game.
Note:
No refund of any cost will be made if an athlete is injured after becoming a team member.
Any and all equipment not returned to athletic office within a month of the request, will be billed to the family. The cost pasted along will be the cost to reorder and ship item needing replaced at full price. Item will not be accepted once family is billed.
What if I want my son to play a specific position?
If this is the case, please have your son or daughter communicate this desire to their coach. The coach will make the final decision for your child. We have your child and the teams’ best interest in mind and this decision must be one the coach makes.
