Membership in Calvary Chapel Christian School Chapter of the National Honor Society is based upon Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.
Scholarship is a commitment to learning. A scholar is willing to devote many hours to study, valuing highly the benefits of a cultivated and disciplined mind. A wise student is continually ready to learn, knowing that the accumulation of knowledge is a life-long venture, extending far past the years of formal education.
“For wisdom is a defense as money is a defense. But the excellence of knowledge is that wisdom gives life to those who have it.” Ecclesiastes 7:12
Leadership which is effective is focused on those being lead, and not on the promotion of the leader’s own self-interest. Thus, leadership is service, and the price is self-sacrifice. The Godly leader is a follower of Christ, who quickly recognizes personal lack and turns to Him for empowerment. Guided by God’s own hand, the leader takes initiative, stands for righteousness, moves ahead when others hesitate, and encourages the same from those who follow.
“Show me Your ways, O Lord;Teach me Your paths. Lead me in your truth and teach me, For You are the God of my salvation, On You I wait all the day.” Psalm 25:4-5
Service is the high calling which confounds the world’s system. One, who is served by man, is honored by the same, but the one whose life is characterized by service, is honored by God. Service is self-sacrifice; best stated by the King of Kings, Jesus Christ, when instructing His followers.
“And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave – Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Matthew 20:27-28
Character is that which manifests in an individual when no one is present to be impressed. It defines who we are, not who we pretend to be. Developing character is a choice and a life-long pursuit. Character is achieved and not received. It is the product of constant action, daily striving to make correct choices. By demonstrating such qualities as respect, responsibility, trustworthiness, fairness, mercy, patience and gentleness; one may hope to prove, by example, the high value that has been placed on character development.
“For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” I Samuel 16:7b
The main objective of this chapter is to create an enthusiasm for learning, stimulate a desire to tender service, promote worthy leadership, and encourage the development of character in all the members.
