What is Accelerated Reading (AR)?
Accelerated Reading is a supplemental program to help encourage students to read on their reading level.
How does Accelerated Reading work?
All students at Calvary are tested with the STAR test to determine their instructional reading level. This test gives a range for example of 2.0-3.0. Books in the school library have been leveled to reflect the level for the books with the AR program software. Students are then directed to check out books in between the range they scored on the STAR test. If they choose books on the lower part of their range the books will be easier. If they choose books on the higher part of their range they will be harder. Most students find a happy median in their level and genre of books. If students choose below their level they will not improve in their reading as the books are too easy and provide no challenge. If students pick books above their range the books will take them into a greater challenge level. Too high may become frustrating.
Not all books are Accelerated Reading books. There is a lot of good literature that the AR program has not leveled. Remember AR is a commercial program and tests have to be purchased for every book. We have a very good selection of tests at Calvary, over 2,000 tests, but this does not mean that your child can only read a book at Calvary if it is an AR book. But it is important to determine what level of book your child is reading so that they will not be frustrated or be reading below their level.
After a student has finished a book on their level they take quiz on the computer. This test only shows how well the student comprehended the book. It is not a reflection of skill or strategies that the student may have as a reader. A TOPS report on each book is printed to show how the student did on that test. The tests also have a point value from 0.5 (half point) on up. Most easy readers have a 0.5 value. As the book levels increase, so does the point value assigned to those books. This is all determined by the AR company and is tracked by the computer software that the school uses.
Who can I contact for more information?
If you have questions or concerns about your student's AR goals please contact your student's classroom teacher or Cheryl Northup and Shannon Peebles, Librarians.

Late Book Procedures
We are blessed to have a library on campus. As the students enjoy and use the library from day-to-day, we need to remind them that there are certain fines that will be imposed in the following circumstances:
1. Late fines are .10 per book per day.
2. A fine of $5.00 will be assessed for any item returned with a missing or damaged barcode label.
3. A fine of $5.00 will be assessed for any damaged or lost periodical.
4. Students will pay the replacement cost of lost materials. If the lost material is found, the students will still owe overdue fines, not to exceed the price of the materials.
5. If materials are damaged, the amount of damage will determine the fee.
6. All charges not paid by the end of each quarter will be billed to the student’s account.
